B O R O V E T S
Borovets, the first and most famous Bulgarian ski resort, is situated at 1350 m above the sea level, on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountain. The resort enjoys a perfect location right at the foot of Mount Moussala (2925 m), the highest peak on the Balkan Peninsula. Only 72 km away from Bulgaria’s capital Sofia, the resort is easily accessible from all parts of the country.
Established at the very end of the 19th century as a holiday residence and a hunting base of the Bulgarian royal family (back then the country used to be a monarchy), Borovets turned to an international skiing centre in the 1970’s. Nowadays the resort provides excellent conditions for practicing a variety of winter sports – alpine and cross-country skiing, biathlon, snowboarding, ski jumping, etc. Borovets has hosted numerous winter competitions, including two editions of the Alpine Skiing World Cup Championship.
The mountain slopes in Borovets have a lasting snow cover of over 1.5 m from November till May. The air is clean and refreshing, and the average temperature in the coldest time of the year (January) is about –4.6°C. The slopes vary in degree of difficulty and are suitable for tourists at all skill levels. All ski runs are marked with signs in several languages, according to international standards.
